Showcase

It is an honor to be able to share just a small piece of my educational journey. I chose to concentrate in two areas at Michigan State University. I chose Literacy education because it is the center of all subject matter in education. I also chose post-secondary education because I have a interest in teaching adults how to teach, and also how to master the art of being effectice role models in the classroom. This showcase will feature a few high moments and low moments while learning the art of teaching literacy and learning the foundation of becoming a post-secondary educator. The end of the showcase will feature the most defining moments of my studies in the education program.

Study Skills Video

Technology has become one of the most important modes in the 21st century. The most fundemental lesson I've learned while trying to combat the fluid changes in Common Core is incorporating technology in my lessons. This is the video and experience I;ve had working with advanced technology. This video was made to capture the importance of study skills to children of age 6-12.

Study Skills Website
Study skills is essential to succeed in school and in life. It isn't enough to just sit inside a classroom and hope to soak up the knowledge an instructor is presenting. You must put effort into learning, understanding, and applying the material. The earlier you can develop these skills, the greater your chance of academic success.
There is no magic bullet when it comes to developing good study habits. Some people need absolute silence to review textbooks, lecture notes, and handouts to prepare for an exam. Others study better in a group bouncing ideas off one another. The study skills you develop will be based heavily on your learning style. This website was developed to help students understand why study skills are important.

Action Research

The area of interest chosen for this report will focused on using the suggested best practices for English Language Learners and apply them in my classroom for a single student.  For this report, I  created  a strategic plan to identify if the suggested practices influenced the selected child’s learning. I worked with a Japanese student, identified as a L1 who speaks little to no English. I devised a plan to use four of the suggested best practices. I  used a series of assessments over several weeks to identify the student’s area of need.  After I identifed the need, I  selected the best practices that may be implemented to assist the student in overcoming the documented gap.  Then, collected  data to see which practice had the greatest impact on learning. The main focus of this research is to modify instruction to meet the student’s individual learning needs.

Project Based Learning

The students are currently learning about electricity. The students in this particular class have a reading deficit. In this lesson, I introduced them to a book while guiding them through specific vocabulary. Afterwards, they took on the role as engineers. The picture above just a small part in the lesson. The student is making a simple circuit to connect to a parallel circuit.

Year- Long Proposal for Teacher Learning

I created this year long proposal for teacher learning because the communication is a factor that is hindering ongoing professional learning and growth for teachers at local elementary schoools in the district I serve.  Teachers have great ideas for activities and lessons, but do not share them with other teachers. There are also classes with no follow up and school policies with no support which ultimately affects teacher attitudes and willingness to participate. Another condition is hindering the professional learning and growth for teachers at Browns Mill elementary school is the scheduling of meetings. A teacher experiences a lot throughout the day such as fatigue, behavior problems, and trying to meet unrealistic expectations. As a result, during our planning time, most teachers are zoned out and not paying attention.

This proposal is filled with resources and activities to support professional development and student guided instruction to ease over the toxic learning community in the elemetary schools.

Collaborative Learning Space

I designed this science and technology support group because a local school in the district did not teach science as a part of their daily curriculum. The overall purpose of this team is to embed science into the daily school schedule and provide hands on science engineering lessons to enhance student based inquiry learning.

Closing The Achievement Gap

As a part of studying urban education, I dove deeper into understanding the achievement gaps. This included the silent death of most urban education, gentrification. The gentrification that pushed blacks out of the city of Atlanta makes up a large portion of the negative circumstances in DeKalb County. What was once a thriving county is now a crime ridden area due to influx of poor black people entering the county because they have nowhere else to go. These people are denied access to job opportunities, adequate health care, and proper education. The children that grow up in these environments are exposed to these seemingly hopeless conditions and feel they don't have any options so they result to crime as a means of survival. This affects their education because their survival take precedence over their schooling. This research is a study of Dekalb County Georgia and the dynamics of education changed over time.

Literature Written In Blood

This critical review was one of the most profound statements I've had the privilege  to study. The text forced me to analyze what the author was saying and what the author was doing. This written piece is also on that made me fall in love with young adult novels, and view them in a different way. I also realized that some of the best novels are written in blood.
